We know a lot of people who have had babies in the last few months including us, so I was looking for a simple handmade gift I could do for them. Burp cloths are in high demand in our house. We can never have enough of them and I feel like I am always doing a load of laundry just to get more clean ones, so I figured they would be great practical gifts, but I also wanted them to be cute. So I came up with these:
To make these you will need:
1/2 yard fleece
Yarn in matching colors (I used leftovers from other projects that matched the colors in the fleece)
G size crochet hook
Straight Pins
Scissors
Quilting needle with large eye
Pattern: The pattern is already sized to fit on an 8.5×11 page. Just click on the image, right click, print it and you are ready to go!
Step 1: Fold fleece in half.
Step2: Print and cut out pattern.
Step 3: Place straight edge on pattern on the fold and pin it to the two layers of material.
Step 4: Cut out material around pattern. You will want pretty sharp scissors so you get a nice edge. Remove pattern and unfold material. You should have a piece that resembles the one I’ve shown in the picture.
Step 5: Cut a long length of yarn (about 1 1/2 yards long).
Step 6: Thread one end of the yarn through the quilting needle and tie a knot in the opposite end.
Step 6: Sew a blanket stitch all the way around the burp cloth (how to picture shown below courtesy of yourchoice needlework.com). Make sure each stitch is about the width of your pointer finger apart.
.Step 7: Tie off the yarn used for the blanket stitch and attach the rest of the yarn to the tail so you can begin crocheting. I did a very simple scallop edge. In each top portion of the blanket stitch that goes along the edge of the fabric crochet:
1 slip stitch
1 single crochet
1 double crochet
1 single crochet
Repeat this pattern all the way around the burp cloth and complete by tying off and hiding the ends in the stitches. All done!
I did all three in about 2 hours while my little guy was napping. Enjoy!
